The month of May is a busy month for parents. It seems like there is a mad dash to wrap up major commitments before the Summer break. Events are placed on the calendar; recitals, banquets, presentations, graduations, parties. Happy moments to celebrate accomplishments. Also a time to look ahead to the future.

In the past, Michelle would keep us busy each May, and she is doing it still.

On May 12th we presented scholarships to three graduating seniors and welcomed them into the MCSF family. On May 21st we attended the recital presented by Dance Express. Sonja and crew taught Michelle how to dance, and the daughter of Michelle’s cousin was in her first recital with this year. On May 25th we attended the Cappies Award Gala. Robert and many from Highlands were nominated for awards. Robert credits Michelle for introducing him to theater and it has become his passion.

Through social media we got to see many of Michelle’s friends announce the successful end of their first year of college. We marvel at the differences that radiate from them. We wonder if they see it. We wonder if their parents see it. We love all of Michelle’s friends and enjoy each opportunity to catch-up and discover what they have done and what they are doing. We constantly pray for their protection and blessings.

Memorial Day marks the unofficial start of Summer. Pools are opened up. Kids count down the remaining days of school. Vacations plans are made. It is a time for leisure, rewarding ourselves for months of effort.

We busy ourselves as we get Robert ready for three weeks of GSA in Lexington. A wonderful opportunity that we hope he enjoys. When he comes home he will be busy with the CAST production of “Chicago”, then getting ready for his Senior year.

Before you know it, we will get emails about the start of school. Social media posts of kids going off to college, and weeping parents worried about missing their baby.

Labor day marks the unofficial end of Summer as we focus on the next cycle and progress. We put behind the leisure of Summer and focus on external expectations and internal goals. College applications. Scholarship applications. College decisions. Graduation.

The wheels of time continue to spin.

Like most people, we take one day at a time. Doing what is necessary. May is a busy month, celebrating accomplishments and making plans for the future. Because time will drag us forward, we always need to keep an eye on the future.

Unlike most people, we are also tethered to the past. One specific moment in time that changed everything. One moment that altered our future forever to always include, “What might have been?
